Question by Jenna: What do you think of the first part of my essay about Facebook use? =)?
Facebook can be an extremely beneficial tool if used appropriately and in moderation. Yet, the use of social-networking sites such as Facebook among teens has become a major concern of many parents today, and it’s definitely understandable. Despite the disquiet amongst adults, various sources report that teens spend anywhere from 20 to over 50 hours per week using social-networking sites and other media. However, rather than blame Facebook or other websites, it is the parents who should be held responsible!
Almost anything can become harmful without proper regulation. If not appropriately supervised and educated from a young age, teens may have to face several consequences of improper Facebook use. Some of these include a lack of sleep or impaired sleep schedule, lower performance in school, and less time spent with family and friends (in real life, anyway). These consequences can be prevented if parents are willing to limit and monitor teen social media use, and foster healthy and productive usage of such technology.
